House A

The ten-storey head-end building with the familiar “STOP WARS” and “Allesandersplatz” lettering is the visible sign of the transformation at the Haus der Statistik. From the end of 2026, affordable long-term spaces for art, culture, social affairs and education will be created here on seven floors – supplemented by a low-threshold, publicly accessible first floor. Space for Berlin’s administration will be created on the three other floors from the end of 2025.

House A, the ten-storey head-end building on Karl-Marx-Allee, has been a symbolic location for new forms of urban development since the debate surrounding the Haus der Statistik began. With its striking façade and the lettering “Allesandersplatz” visible from afar, it has become a symbol of the desire for a different city oriented towards the common good.

As the first building block in the House of Statistics initiative’s usage program, House A will be gradually renovated from 2022. A total of 8,400 m² of gross floor space –from the first floor to the sixth floor as well as partial areas on the tenth floor – will be available for cultural, social and educational uses. The Berlin administration will move into three additional floors at the same time from the end of 2025.

The sociocultural spaces are managed by the AndersMachen cooperative, which selected the first organizations as early as 2023 in a multi-stage tendering process. A committee of representatives from the neighborhood development, active pioneer users and external experts from the fields of art, culture, social affairs, education, inclusion and climate and intergenerational justice were involved.

Once BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH has handed over the shell of the building to AndersBauen gGmbH in autumn 2025, the user-designed interior fit-out will begin – based on the principle of self-construction. Completion is planned for the end of 2026.

In addition to permanently rented individual rooms, common rooms (e.g. workshop rooms, floor kitchens) and optional rooms will also be created in House A, which will remain open for temporary, community-oriented formats such as exhibitions, educational programs or performances.

House A will thus become an open place for the urban community – managed as a cooperative, used in a variety of ways and affordable in the long term.
