Participation becomes involvement: since summer 2019, first floor areas of the existing buildings and temporary structures in the open space around the Haus der Statistik have been allocated to actors from the fields of art, culture, education, social affairs and the neighborhood. These pioneering uses make the district tangible even during the construction and planning phase – they test on a small scale what will later become established in the long term.
Unlike traditional interim uses, which usually only exist for a transitional period, the pioneer uses at the Haus der Statistik aim to become permanent. They are part of the cooperative development process and create real added value for the urban community: neighborhood and city-wide needs find space here - in the middle of the city center.
Operating concepts, synergies of use and sustainable structures are tested at an early stage in the real-world laboratory. This creates the basis for urban development that is oriented towards the common good, socially just and affordable - as an alternative to the market-driven exploitation of urban spaces.
The pioneer uses create space for those who have a high social relevance and yet are often affected by displacement. Some projects remain temporary, others become permanent and become an integral part of the future neighborhood. By developing prototypical, transferable structures, the pioneer uses contribute significantly to the model character of the Haus der Statistik.
