Vision

LONG-TERM

The city as a common good: land is a limited resource that must be usable for all in the long term. The Haus der Statistik takes a stand against real estate speculation: instead of short-term exploitation, the focus here is on the common good. Public spaces and buildings are to be preserved and used in the long term - as places of social interaction, cultural production and democratic participation.

PAYABLE

Space for everyone: The neighborhood will provide secure, affordable long-term space for a broad range of users. In addition to 290 state-owned rental apartments, there will be inclusive forms of housing provided by social organizations. The quarter will be complemented by spaces for art, culture, social affairs and education - precisely those uses that are increasingly being squeezed out of the city center. Administration is also being rethought here: the “Town Hall of the Future” is an open administrative building that will enliven the district and serve as a contact point for citizens.

VERSATILE

Participation right from the start: The broad participation of urban society has been a cornerstone of the project from the very beginning. Different participation formats make it possible to contribute ideas and shape the city together. Since 2019, so-called “pioneer uses” have been creating diverse spaces for art, culture, social affairs, education, food and climate protection - a model for what is now gradually being implemented on a large scale.

COPRODUCTIVE

Administration and civil society together: urban development here is not a top-down decision, but a collaborative process. The five cooperation partners from the administration and civil society (KOOP5) work on the development of the neighborhood as equals. This cooperation combines the knowledge and commitment of the urban community with the planning and financial possibilities of the public sector. In this way, the project sets standards for an urban policy geared towards the common good, which can point the way forward for Berlin and beyond.

MODEL-LIKE

Future of urban development: model project means trying out new things: Procedures and planning processes were opened up, new forms of cooperation between civil society, politics and administration were tested and uses in the neighborhood were united that represent Berlin's diversity. With its cooperative model, the Haus der Statistik is not intended to be an island, but rather a pioneering project for Berlin's urban development.

SUSTAINABLE

Combining ecology, social responsibility and economy: Sustainability means combining ecological and social responsibility with a viable economy. The Haus der Statistik model project focuses on preserving the existing building, sustainable construction methods for new buildings and a forward-looking energy concept: heat exchangers in the sewer provide environmentally friendly heating and cooling, green roofs improve the urban climate, photovoltaic systems generate renewable energy and rainwater is infiltrated directly onto the site. In addition, publicly accessible open spaces and inclusive play and sports areas are being created, making the district lively and liveable.
