Allocation of space as an instrument of urban development for the common good

An important milestone in the implementation of the cooperative development concept at the Haus der Statistik was reached in summer 2023 with the conclusion of the first award round: in a multi-stage process, projects and organizations were selected that strengthen the neighbourhood in its social, cultural and functional diversity. The selection was made by an interdisciplinary committee comprising representatives of cooperative neighborhood development, active pioneers and external experts from the fields of architecture, urban planning and civil society.

The allocation of space is far more than an administrative act - it is a central control element for the quality and resilience of the future mix of uses. All allocation procedures follow a clearly defined set of criteria: The focus is on social added value, orientation towards the common good, the fit with the desired mix of uses and the potential for active cooperation with other stakeholders in the Haus der Statistik.

Further allocation rounds will take place in stages, depending on the progress of construction and the completion of usable areas. In the next phase, this will relate in particular to spaces in the so-called experimental buildings and the curated first floors - central building blocks for a programmatically dense first floor zone in the sense of an urban common good.

The aim is not merely to allocate space, but to create structures for lively, collective urban production - supported by a strong network of local actors, interdisciplinary perspectives and a clear attitude oriented towards the common good.

Information on upcoming tenders and application processes will be published regularly in our current newsletter, and during the open award rounds all relevant information on available spaces, conditions of participation, selection criteria, deadlines and how to apply can be found on the following page:
