For two months, the Contemporary Textile Art Biennial returns to occupy various cultural facilities and the public space of the city of Guimaraes, Portugal. Online Guided tour through the newly inaugurated Textile Art Biennial (To be Confirmed).

Wednesday 7.09. – 17:30 –   Dirty Dyes: Textile industry and its impact on land and people. With Giulia Pompilj and Elena Sofia Stranges

Consumers of fast fashion are often unaware of the exploitation and the consequences the working conditions have on the workers’ lives. After learning about them and about how synthetic dyes in the textile industry are impacting natural ecosystems, polluting water and contaminating our soil, Giulia Pompilj and Elena Sofia Stranges decided to dedicate their design practice to the exploration of techniques that allow a symbiotic dialogue with our surrounding nature.

In this talk they will tell us about the effects of synthetic dyes on land as well as the working conditions in which some workers produce the clothes that currently fuel the fast-fashion industry.

Thursday 8.09. – 17:30 – How do you know what you want? e-Textiles and sustainability with Mika Satomi from KOBAKANT | EN

How can we imagine technology and textiles to be a part of sustainable society? 

Electronic Textile is a technique that uses metalized or carbon infused electrically conductive threads and fabrics to create electronics that are made of textiles. KOBAKANT (Mika Satomi + Hannah Perner-Wilson) has been exploring this technique in their artistic practices for the last 10+ years, creating unique soft electronics such as knitted sensors and embroidered speakers. Focusing on the latest project “KOBA maßschneiderei”, Mika Satomi will introduce their journey into this field and the online documentation they have been co-authoring, to talk about electronics, textiles and sustainability.

Friday 9.09. – 17:30 – Fashion Revolution: Fashion needs a change! with Ariane Piper | EN

Fashion Revolution draws attention to the problematic sides of the fashion industry and at the same time shows us some solutions and provides a call for actions. The fashion and textile industry is one of the dirtiest and most exploitative industries in the world. Its industry’s complex supply chain, the working conditions and the situation of the many workers are shown, but also possibilities for action – by the industry as well as by consumers. For example, by consuming clothing more consciously: This means having fun with individual pieces for longer, being more aware and leaving a positive impact with joy.

Saturday 17.09 – 18:00 h – Final Exhibition of Made in Textile Art Camp and opening performance with Brigitte Kießling

During the Made in Textile Art Camp educational program, a group of young participants will produce artistic textile pieces that will be exhibited at the end of the week in a final exhibition. The opening will be celebrated during the recurring sustainable marketplace “KO-Markt” at Haus der Statistik (within a special edition dedicated to textiles) and feature a special performance that embodies the topics learned during the course and serves as an accessible communication platform for all kinds of audiences.

Für zwei Monate belegt die zeitgenössische Textilkunstbiennale erneut diverse öffentliche Standorte und kulturelle Räumlichkeiten in Guimarães, Portugal. Eine virtuelle Tour durch die neu eröffnete Textilkunstbiennale (Termin wird noch bestätigt).

 

Mittwoch 7.09. – 17:30 – Dirty Dyes: Die Textilindustrie und ihre Auswirkungen auf Land und Menschen Mit Giulia Pompilj und Elena Sofia Stranges | EN 

Konsumenten von Fast Fashion sind sich oft der Ausbeutung und der Folgen der Arbeitsbedingungen für das Leben der Arbeiter:innen nicht bewusst. Nachdem Giulia Pompilj und Elena Sofia Stranges erfahren haben, wie sich synthetische Farbstoffe in der Textilindustrie auf natürliche Ökosysteme auswirken, das Wasser verschmutzen und unseren Boden verseuchen, haben sie beschlossen, in ihrer Designpraxis auf recycelte Textilien und nicht-chemische Farbstoffe aus städtischen und lokalen Pflanzen auszuweichen. In diesem Vortrag erläutern sie die Auswirkungen synthetischer Farbstoffe auf den Boden sowie die Arbeitsbedingungen, unter denen manche Arbeitskräfte die Kleidung herstellen, die derzeit die Fast-Fashion-Industrie antreibt.

 

Donnerstag 8.09. – 17:30 – Wie erkennst du, was du willst? e-Textilien und Nachhaltigkeit mit Mika Satomi von KOBAKANT | EN

Wie können wir uns Technologie und Textilien als Teil einer nachhaltigen Gesellschaft vorstellen?

Bei elektronischen Textilien handelt es sich um eine Technik, bei der metallisierte oder mit Kohlenstoff beschichtete leitfähige Fäden und Stoffe verwendet werden, um Elektronik aus Textilien herzustellen. KOBAKANT (Mika Satomi + Hannah Perner-Wilson) erforschen diese Technik seit mehr als 10 Jahren in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis und entwerfen einzigartige weiche Elektronik wie etwa gestrickte Sensoren und gestickte Lautsprecher. Anhand ihres neuesten Projekts „KOBA maßschneiderei“ wird Mika Satomi ihre Reise in dieses Gebiet und die Online-Dokumentation, die sie gemeinsam verfasst haben, vorstellen, um über Elektronik, Textilien und Nachhaltigkeit zu sprechen.

 

Freitag 9.09. – 17:30 – Fashion Revolution: Mode braucht einen Wandel! mit Ariane Piper | EN

Fashion Revolution macht auf die problematischen Seiten der Modeindustrie aufmerksam und zeigt gleichzeitig Lösungen und Handlungsansätze auf. Die Mode- und Textilindustrie ist eine der schmutzigsten und ausbeuterischsten Industrien der Welt. Die komplexe Lieferkette, die Arbeitsbedingungen und die Situation der vielen Arbeiter:innen werden aufgezeigt, aber auch Aktionsmöglichkeiten – sowohl für die Industrie als auch für die Verbraucher:innen. Zum Beispiel, einen bewussteren Konsum von Kleidung: Das bedeutet, länger Spaß an einzelnen Stücken zu haben, bewusster zu leben und mit Freude einen positiven Einfluss zu hinterlassen.

 

Samstag 17.09 – 18:00 Uhr – Abschlussausstellung des Made in Textile Art Camps und Eröffnung mit einer Performance von Brigitte Kießling

Während des Bildungsprogramms Made in Textile Art Camp wird eine Gruppe von jungen Teilnehmenden künstlerische Textilarbeiten herstellen, die am Ende der Woche in einer Abschlussausstellung gezeigt werden. Die Eröffnung wird während des KO-Marktes im Haus der Statistik gefeiert (im Rahmen einer Sonderausgabe, die Textilien gewidmet ist) und beinhaltet eine spezielle Performance, die die während des Kurses erlernten Themen verkörpert und als zugängliche Kommunikationsplattform für ein breites Publikum dient.
