Chinese indie cinema in Berlin|Film curation project | Cinema as public space|Creating connections through screenings and dialogues
In the upcoming April, our first curated film program New Woman, New Narrative is bringing an award-winning, engaging and moving feature documentary about Yu Xiuhua, a rural woman who has become the best-known poet in China overnight, her literature journey, her personal life, and her inner expressions. Alongside the screening, there will be a small exhibition of her poetry (in Chinese and English), that we invite you to dwell on.

Still Tomorrow (《摇摇晃晃的人间》)
Dir. Fan Jian|China|88min|OV with English subs
The feature documentary Still Tomorrow is an intimate portrait of Yu Xiuhua, a 39-year-old woman with inborn cerebral palsy, who lives in rural China throughout her lifetime and gains enormous fame overnight from her poems, particularly the one with an eye-catching title ‘Cross Half of China to Sleep with You’. Her candid attitude towards love and sexuality embodied in her poetic language is widely celebrated while leading to some controversy.
She is regarded by critics and the media as “China’s Emily Dickinson”. Meanwhile, the conflict in her family is scaled up sharply by her determination to divorce her husband after their two-decade-long arranged marriage.
