Reclaim the Water!

Eröffnung der Ausstellung „Islands of Utopia“ und Weltpremiere des musuku – Museum der Subkulturen.

Die Ausstellung findet als Pioniernutzung im Haus der Statistik am Alexanderplatz statt und erzählt von Subkulturen und Gemeinschaften, die neue Spielräume auf dem Wasser ausloten. Forderte der Franzose Henri Lefebvre das „Recht auf Stadt“, so heißt es heute auch „Reclaim the Water“.

Die Fotoausstellung zeigt u.a. die phantastischen, von der Künstlerin Swoon initiierten „Swimming Cities“ (Fotos Tod Seele), eine über Jahrzehnte gewachsene Hausboot Gemeinschaft in der San Francisco Bay (Fotos Nicole Strasser), Portraits aus der Rummelsburger Bucht (Fotos Saskia Uppenkamp) und die Initiative Flussbad Berlin.

Die Soundinstallation „Synthetic Sea“ von Chris Keller lädt das Publikum ein, an sensorgesteuerten „Soundbojen“ in die Inszenierung einzugreifen und sie akustisch zu verändern.

Opening of the “Islands of Utopia” exhibition and world première of musuku – Museum der Subkulturen.

The exhibition – one of the pioneer projects being held in the Haus der Statistik on Alexanderplatz – looks at the subcultures and communities venturing onto the water in search of new freedoms. Whereas the French philospher Henri Lefebvre famously demanded a right to the city, the new approach invites us to reclaim the water.

The exhibition includes photographs of the fantastical “Swimming Cities” initiated by the artist Swoon (photos: Tod Seele), a houseboat community which has evolved over several decades in San Francisco Bay (photos: Nicole Strasser), portraits from the Rummelsburger Bucht (photos: Saskia Uppenkamp) and the Flussbad Berlin initiative.

The “Synthetic Sea” acoustic installation by Chris Keller uses sensor-controlled “sound buoys” to enable the public to intervene and change the course of the performance.
