Der essayistische Kurzfilm The Sea Runs Thru My Veins zeigt eine Collage von postmigrantischen Stimmen aus unterschiedlichen geopolitischen Sphären. Daran anschließend ruft At Home But Not at Home durch den Einsatz von kontrastierenden Materialien postkoloniale Erinnerungen wach. Gemeinsam mit der Aneignung und Umdeutung von Landkarten in Sewing Borders und dem ästhetischen Einsatz von Undurchsichtigkeit, Gerüchten und Geheimnissen in Endnote entwirft jeder dieser Kurzfilme eine queere Gegenerzählung zu dominanten Narrativen und spiegelt dekoloniales Wissen wieder. Alle vier Filme lassen nachvollziehen, wie unsichtbar gemachte Personen die Räume, die ihre Körper normalerweise besetzen, durchkreuzen und überschreiten.

Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa: Far from Home wirft einen Blick auf iranische Filmkultur durch die Linse der iranisch-amerikanischen Filmemacherin Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, die gegen Ende der 1970er Jahre mit einigen prominenten Vertreter*innen der iranischen Nouvelle Vague zusammenarbeitete, bevor sie in die Vereinigten Staaten emigrierte. Ihre Filme sind intime, autobiografische Werke, die sich mit Fragen der kulturellen Identität und des Exils befassen. In Silent Majority isst eine Gruppe in einem Restaurant, in dem Zeichen von Intoleranz, Angst und Misstrauen in der Luft liegen. Saless: Far from Home ist ein bewegendes Porträt von Sohrab Shahid Saless. Es zeigt die Schlüsselfigur der iranischen iranische Nouvelle Vague (und später des Neuen Deutschen Films) während seiner letzten Tage im Exil in Chicago und kombiniert informelle Interviews mit zahlreichen Ausschnitten aus seinen Filmen. Die witzigen, temporeichen und vielschichtigen filmischen Memoiren Jerry & Me nutzen den Komiker Jerry Lewis, um zwiegespaltene Erinnerungen an den Iran freizulegen. Das Ergebnis ist eines der wichtigsten Werke des essayistischen Kinos des letzten Jahrzehnts.

„Sag ihm einfach, du hast eine neue Idee, irgendwas über deine Heimat, was Politisches“, berät eine Freundin die Filmemacherin Narges Kalhor, die versucht, ihren Abschlussfilm fertigzustellen. Dass sie daran schier verzweifelt, liegt an einem weißen Redakteur, dessen Kommentare den Film aus dem Off immer wieder unterbrechen. Er möchte den Film, wie er sagt, den „Sehgewohnheiten” des Publikums näher bringen und fordert hier und dort noch „Heimatgeschichten“ sowie Bilder von einer Flucht oder „etwas nicht zu Kompliziertes“.So entstehen mehrere Filme in einem, und das Publikum wird Zeuge dieses Prozesses. Erzählen, Überreden und Überzeugen sind zentrale Motive. Narges Kalhor, geboren 1984 in Teheran, Iran. Sie studierte Filmregie und visuelle Kommunikation, beantragte 2009 bei einem Festival besuch in Deutschland politisches Asyl. Der Abschlussfilm ihres Filmstudiums In the Name of Scheherazade wurde beim Festival Visions du Réel in Nyon uraufgeführt und mit dem Preis des Goethe-Instituts für den besten Dokumentarfilm beim DOK Leipzig ausgezeichnet.

The Reminiscence of Forsaken Place is a love letter to Bangkok and a middle finger to late capitalism as it morphs into an unbearable dystopian landscape. TheIn/Extinguishable Fire interweaves histories between the GDR and Vietnam through intergenerational tales about aircrafts and revolutionaries. Those topics enter into a dialogue with Blessed Land, a deeply nuanced film that brings questions of landscape use across different classes in contemporary Vietnam to the surface.

The Story depicts a close-up of a face voicing questions on sexual illiberalism and Buddhist-Muslim coexistence in the south of Thailand. Celestial Body is a beautifully raw and intimate portrait of a relationship that unfolds in consecutive conversations occurring between a young couple as they lie on a makeshift bed under a pink mosquito net. Ploy is an ambitious archive-based speculative documentary that chronicles migration from Thailand to Singapore and encounters with a justice system designed to dehumanize bodies who don’t fit the moral template of a modern nation state, targeting sex workers in particular. These three works remind us how capitalist understandings of laboring bodies undermine all manner of human nuances.
